メリットとデメリットの比較表現を学びます。メリット（merit）・デメリット（demerit）という言い方は日本で使われているのとはニュアンスが異なることがあるので使わないほうが無難です。

【pros and cons 良い点と悪い点】
＜参考＞ メリット(merit) とデメリット(demerit)という日本での言い方はpros and cons とはニュアンスがやや異なる。Merit(s) は「長所、美点」、demerit(s) は「短所、欠点」。
1. Before we make any decisions, let’s weigh the pros and cons of each option.
いかなる決定を下すより前に、それぞれの選択肢の良い点と悪い点を比較検討しよう。
■ weigh （決定するために）比較検討する；はかりにかける
2. We spent some time debating the pros and cons of opening a new location.
新しい店を出すことの良い点と悪い点を、私達はしばらく討議した。
【upside 良い面、利点 ； （株価や値段等の）上昇傾向】
＜補足＞悪い面(the downside)もある状況に対して使う。
1. One upside to the new office is its location.
新しいオフィスの良い面の一つは、そのロケーションだ。
2. The upside to this approach is that we can respond to customers in real-time.
このアプローチの利点は、顧客にリアルタイムで返答できることです。

1. It sounds like a great plan – the obvious downside is that it’s going to cost a lot of money.

雑誌広告に飛び込む前に、マイナス面を熟考したほうがいいですね。
